Week two of SoSI, and we’re starting the preparations for the Steve Reich Marathon Concert this upcoming Saturday. I’ve been assigned to Drumming, and I am so excited! Drumming is perhaps one of Reich’s most influential and epic works, and if you have never seen and heard the piece, check out So Percussion’s video of the First Part.
Although So’s video captures the First Part of this piece well, I cannot begin to describe Drumming’s powerful sound and scope. Logistically, the piece needs 9 people, singers, piccolo players, 4 pairs of well-tuned bongos, three marimbas, and three glockenspiels. It takes at least an hour to play. And what’s most amazing is that the piece is only centered around the development of one simple rhythm.
I have a lot to talk about this piece, but I must get back to rehearsing Drumming with Jason Treuting and the rest of my SoSI group. There’ll be more, I promise!
