“Michigandered” Marimba

Michigan Marimba

On Sunday December 8th at 7:30pm in Cook Recital Hall, I will perform Victor Marquez’s “The Fallen Tree” on Alex Smith’s “Michigandered” Marimba.  The performance will include a screening of a short documentary on “sustainable marimba craftsmanship.”

It has truly been an honor to work with Alex and Victor on this project.  Sustainability is an issue that percussionists will have to face, and it’s time the world confronts it.  Also, it has been fun learning Victor’s piece on Alex’s marimba, which I have nicknamed Sassafrassy.  This is mostly due to the sassafras marimba bars.  Every time I play the marimba, it smells so good!  Additionally, the marimba has such a unique timbre and voice.  Everyone should hear it!
